Prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM) (also referred to as premature rupture of membranes) is the rupture of the chorioamnionic membrane with a gush of watery fluid through the birth canal before true labor begins.
Worldwide, PROM contributes significantly to maternal and child mortality and morbidity. Accurate diagnosis of PROM in both term and preterm pregnancies is crucial for early gestational-age-specific intervention.
