Remote electrical neuromodulation competently attenuates migraine pain and the most bothersome symptoms, presenting a safe and non-pharmacological option for acute migraine relief.
In a pioneering clinical trial, remote electrical neuromodulation (REN) provided superior relief of migraine pain and the most bothersome symptoms when compared to placebo. The goal of this randomized, multicenter, double-blind, sham-controlled study was to examine the safety & effectiveness of REN device for migraine management.
Overall, 252 adults suffering from migraine were randomly allocated to get either active or sham treatment using a smartphone-controlled REN device. The device delivered non-painful electrical stimulation for 30-45 minutes to the upper arm within one hour of migraine onset, targeting peripheral nerves to activate conditioned pain modulation, a natural analgesic process that inhibits pain in remote regions of the body.
The proportion of volunteers achieving pain mitigation at 2 hours post-treatment, defined as a drop in degree of pain from moderate or severe to mild or none was the key endpoint ascertained. Relief of the most bothersome symptom and achieving pain-free status at 2 hours were key secondary outcomes. When compared to sham stimulation, active stimulation was highly efficacious in attaining pain relief, pain-free status, and relief of the most bothersome symptoms at 2 hours after treatment.
These benefits persisted up to 48 hours post-treatment, indicating that the effects of REN were not only immediate but sustained. Moreover, the incidence of device-related adverse events was low in both groups, with no vital difference between the active treatment and sham treatment groups, underscoring REN's safety profile (Table 1).
The findings of this study suggest that REN, a non-invasive and easy-to-use device, offers a viable, drug-free option for those seeking acute migraine relief. With its minimal side effects and ability to activate the body's natural pain modulation pathways, REN yields an exciting novel avenue for migraine care, especially for those who may prefer non-pharmacological treatments. The device's efficacy, combined with its ease of use and safety, positions REN as a promising alternative to traditional pharmacological migraine therapies.
