What's new?

Timely rehabilitation with paraspinal intramuscular (IM) injection of atelocollagen could enhance muscle mass and composition, making it a valuable addition to standard epidural steroid injections.

IM administration of atelocollagen injection following epidural corticosteroids proved to be an effective pain relief option for people suffering from chronic low back pain, as per a retrospective observational study published in 'Journal of Clinical Medicine'. It was beneficial in enhancing the functional capacity of these patients.

Study Overview:

  • Participants: 608 CLBP patients aged 20-80 years, with moderate to severe pain (Numerical Rating Scale [NRS] ≥ 4), unresponsive to conservative treatments for over three months.
  • Method: Participants received lumbar epidural steroid injections (LES group), with half also receiving additional atelocollagen injections (ATCOL group).
  • Assessment: Pain and function were measured via the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and the Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire, respectively before beginning the treatment and three months after the invention.

Substantial reduction in pain and functional recovery were observed in both groups (Figure 1 and Figure 2).

Patients receiving the additional atelocollagen injections showed a more substantial improvement and a higher success rate.
