Curcumin, derived from turmeric counteracts oxidative stress and inflammation, hence safe and effective for preventing and treating chronic metabolic ailments, such as diabetes, depression, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular disease, etc.

Curcumin, the main active component of Curcuma longa shown to protect against chronic inflammatory metabolic diseases, possibly through improved glucose homeostasis and decreases in malondialdehyde, total cholesterol and inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α), as per a recent review published in ‘Nutrients’.

This review by Young Min Lee and Yoona Kim dug deep into the influence of curcumin on inflammatory metabolic disorders by thoroughly analyzing the meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). PubMed and MEDLINE were searched up to July 2023 to find 54 relevant studies. These studies covered various health indicators, including antioxidant levels, glucose control, cholesterol (or lipid profile), inflammation, blood pressure, depression and cognitive functioning.

Below in Table 1 summarizes the effects of curcumin based on meta-analyses of RCTs:

Therefore, curcumin has a potential role in the prevention and treatment of different chronic inflammatory metabolic diseases by enhancing glucose homeostasis, decreasing inflammation markers, etc.
