Diabetes is not a risk factor
for the development of long-term post-COVID symptoms in people who recovered
from COVID-19.
In hospitalized COVID-19 survivors, no association of diabetes with the development of long-term post COVID symptoms was found, according to the findings of a case-control multicenter study published in Diabetes. This study examined the link of diabetes with the presence of long-term post-COVID symptoms in individuals who recovered from coronavirus infection.
The study incorporated individuals with a positive diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and hospitalized during the 1st wave of the pandemic. Subjects with a prior diagnosis of diabetes and under medical supervision were regarded as cases. Notably, two age- and gender-matched people without presenting diabetes per case were enrolled as controls. Collection of hospitalization and clinical data was done with the aid of hospital medical records.
The recruited people were scheduled for the telephonic
interview. The list of post-COVID symptoms was systematically examined. The
recruited people were requested to freely report any symptoms.
The anxiety and depressive symptoms were examined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) while the sleep quality was examined via Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
The multivariable conditional logistic regression models were made. In total, 145 diabetic people and 144 non-diabetic controls who recovered from coronavirus were evaluated at 7.2 months (Standard deviation 0.6) following hospital discharge. The number of post-COVID symptoms was found to be similar between the groups (Incident Rate Ratio 1.06). Pain, fatigue, and dyspnea on exertion were the most prevalent post-COVID symptoms.
There were no between-group differences in any of the post-COVID symptoms. Likewise, no differences in limitations with activities of daily living were either noted between people with/without diabetes.
