What's new?

In people diagnosed with cervicogenic headache, cervical facet injections may be effective for pain management.

A systematic review and meta-analysis showed that intraarticular steroid injections into cervical facet joints could be helpful to treat cervicogenic headache. Michael Appeadu et al. aimed to assess efficacy of cervical facet steroid injections in treating cervicogenic headache.

For trials utilizing cervical facet injections to alleviate cervicogenic headache in adults 18 and older, a thorough search of Web of Science, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature Plus with Full Text, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, and Ovid Medline database was conducted. The mean postinjection pain scores were among the major endpoints. To pool the results, a random effects model was employed, which were then reported as mean differences with 95% confidence intervals.

The inclusion criteria was satisfied by 3 studies with 64 subjects. Data from each examined trial showed that cervical facet injections improved mean pain scores from baseline to post-treatment. The total effect size was 3.299 when mean difference score on Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was pooled and heterogeneity (I2) was 36.11%. To conclude, cervical facet injections may be useful in managing cervicogenic headache.
