Magnesium and potassium supplementation effectively relieves insomnia in diabetic patients by regulating sleep hormones, reducing insomnia severity, and enhancing sleep duration.
In a study by Sidra Khalid et al., supplementation with magnesium, potassium, and their combination demonstrated a powerful impact on serum cortisol and melatonin levels—key hormones regulating sleep. This intervention not only balanced these vital hormones but also markedly alleviated insomnia severity in diabetic patients, enhancing their sleep duration and overall well-being.
This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of magnesium and potassium supplementation on the severity of insomnia in diabetic patients, aiming to provide potential relief for those affected by sleep disturbances associated with diabetes mellitus. The research, a randomized controlled trial, involved 320 diabetic patients, with 290 completing the 2-month follow-up period. Using Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the severity and duration of insomnia were measured prior to and after the trial.
Participants were divided into four groups: a placebo group (T1), magnesium-only group (T2), potassium-only group (T3), and a combination of magnesium and potassium (T4). Additionally, serum levels of melatonin and cortisol, two key sleep hormones, were calculated prior to and after the trial via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Analysis of the results showed a prominent improvement in the ISI among the supplementation groups when compared to the placebo group. Further analysis revealed that serum cortisol levels also markedly improved in the T2, T3, and T4 groups.
Similar improvements were observed in serum melatonin levels. In conclusion, the study suggested that magnesium and potassium, either individually or combined, positively affect sleep hormones such as cortisol and melatonin. It also reduces the severity of insomnia and improves sleep duration in diabetic patients, offering a promising alternative treatment for those struggling with sleep disturbances related to diabetes.
