What's new?

Modest link between diabetes in mothers and attention-deficit/hyperactivity condition in children, while exposing a causal connection with gestational diabetes, urging a reevaluation of previous risk estimates.

A fresh perspective on maternal diabetes mellitus (MDM) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) risk in kids was revealed in a recent study issued in ‘Nature Medicine’ journal which comprised of data from over 3.6 million mother-child pairs across multiple countries.

Adrienne Y. L. Chan et al. conducted a multinational cohort study with over three and a half million pairs of mother and child, tracking them through 2020. Using Cox proportional hazards regression, they assessed the relationship between various types of MDM, gestational diabetes and pre-gestational diabetes and the peril of ADHD in children.

Offspring born to mothers with any kind of diabetes were more prone to ADHD compared to those without exposure. The risk was also higher for gestational and pre-gestational diabetes. Interestingly, when comparing siblings with different exposure statuses to gestational diabetes, ADHD risks were similar, pointing to possible shared familial factors influencing the results.

The study revealed a modest association between maternal diabetes and ADHD, with gestational diabetes showing less of a direct influence than assumed earlier. This challenges past findings and advocates that factors like genetics and family environment might play a bigger role than diabetes alone.
