For patients with knee osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal ultrasonography is highly valuable as a diagnostic tool.
A study published in "Disease Markers" depicted that in knee osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal ultrasonography has a high diagnostic value. It can be used to diagnose the lesion as early as feasible and is also useful to assess the effect of conservative therapy. Yan Pan et al. aimed to explore the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in conservative treatment and diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis.
In total, 85 volunteers with knee osteoarthritis were chosen for the research arm, and another 85 healthy volunteers were included in the control arm. The thickness of suprapatellar bursa synovium, the depth of suprapatellar bursa effusion, and the thickness of medial and lateral femoral malleolus cartilage were all measured using musculoskeletal ultrasonography in individuals who had osteoarthritis of the knee.
After musculoskeletal ultrasonography, all participants in the study arm underwent acupuncture, and the procedure was repeated after two weeks of therapy. The inter-group differences in musculoskeletal ultrasound-related measures were compared. In comparison to the control group, the research group's lateral and medial femoral malleolus cartilage thicknesses were substantially smaller. Both thickness of synovial membrane and depth of effusion in suprapatellar bursa were substantially higher in comparison with control group.
Musculoskeletal ultrasonography revealed knee osteoarthritis, including patellar ligament injury, meniscus injury, synovial hyperplasia, joint effusion, and cruciate ligament injury. Ultrasonography and arthroscopy did not significantly vary in abnormal status. After treatment, the medial and lateral femoral malleolus of the femur had much thicker cartilage than they had prior to the therapy. Both the thickness of the suprapatellar bursa synovium and the depth of deep suprapatellar bursa effusion were much lower than they were before therapy.
In cases of knee osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal ultrasonography offers a high diagnostic value. In order to give a reference basis for clinical modification or formulation of additional intervention plans, musculoskeletal ultrasonography can be utilized to promptly diagnose the lesion and to accurately ascertain the effect of conservative therapy.
