NanoHAP lozenges successfully minimize tooth decay risk by boosting plaque pH

Nanohydroxyapatite-containing lozenges effectively raise plaque pH and mitigate the acidic effects of sucrose, promoting quicker recovery for healthier teeth.

In a recent research, the use of a sugar-free Nanohydroxyapatite (nanoHAP) lozenge elevated plaque pH, reduced the decline in pH after sucrose intake, and promoted quick recovery to neutrality, thereby decreasing the extent of demineralization. This study investigated how nanoHAP lozenges influence plaque pH following sugar consumption, offering valuable insights into improving oral health management.

In this double-blind crossover study, 16 adult participants underwent 4 interventions: 10% w/v sucrose solution, 10% w/v sorbitol solution, nanoHAP lozenge, and a combination of sucrose followed by the nanoHAP lozenge. Resting plaque pH was measured before each intervention and at intervals from 3 to 30 minutes post-consumption. A 7-day washout period separated each intervention. Analysis of data was done via ANOVA and Tukey’s test.

Sorbitol had no impact on plaque pH, while the nanoHAP lozenge raised it from a baseline of 7.0 ± 0.3 to 7.8 ± 0.2 within 30 minutes. Sucrose reduced plaque pH from a baseline of 7.0 ± 0.4 to a minimum of 5.1 ± 0.1 at 7 minutes. It then rose above the critical pH for enamel dissolution (5.5) by 12 minutes and returned to baseline after more than 30 minutes.  After using the lozenge following the sucrose challenge, plaque pH elevated to 5.5 in 8 minutes and returned to baseline in 24 minutes.

The cH area (hydrogen ion concentration area) from sucrose (1.82 sq. units) was markedly higher than that observed with the lozenge (0.48 sq. units) after sucrose exposure. To sum up, the sugar-free nanoHAP lozenge helped raise plaque pH, lessened the drop in pH from sucrose, and quickly brought pH back to neutral, reducing tooth damage. This study suggests that the nanoHAP lozenge may be a good option for preventing dental caries. A sweet solution for better oral health!
