People with acute insomnia can be recommended a combination of low-frequency electroacupuncture along with cognitive behavioral therapy.
A combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) plus low-frequency electroacupuncture (EA) enhances sleep patterns, reduces sleep severity index, mitigates daytime sleepiness symptoms, and boosts overall well-being and cognition of insomnia patients, a novel study issued in September 2023 in the 'EXPLORE' journal clarified. This study by Qiu-Ju Su and Hua Feng aimed to explore the therapeutic effects of low-frequency EA in conjunction with CBT for individuals suffering from short-term or acute insomnia.
The study participants with acute insomnia were randomly divided patients into two arms:
The efficacy of these therapies for sleeping disorder was assessed with the help of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep Scale (DBAS) scores. The study examined the comprehensive therapeutic impact of both modalities and examined the number of individuals who suffered from chronic insomnia after 4 weeks.
The findings were remarkable, demonstrating statistically noteworthy differences in the DBAS score, ISI score, PSQI sleep rate, and PSQI score within the same group and between groups. Notably, there was a significant difference concerning the DBAS scores between the two groups before and following these therapies, as well as in the composition ratio of complete therapeutic effects between these groups.
