Combination of Flower pollen
extract with vitamins found to be more effective for pain relief and improving
quality of life as compared to Serenoa repens extract for CP/CPPS.
A comparative analysis of two different treatments published in the journal- 'Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Allergy Agents in Medicinal Chemistry' stated that flower pollen extract along with vitamins improves the IPSS/NIH-CPSI (International Prostatic Symptom Score/NIH-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index) score for up to 74.5% and 84.5% respectively in patients with Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Also, the antioxidant effect of flower pollen extract along with vitamins on IPSS score was greater in patients with hypertension.
Macchione N. et al. aimed to investigate the effect on the patient's quality of life and symptoms of Flower pollen extract in association with vitamins as compared to Serenoa repens 320 mg in patients with CP/CPPS. All the consecutive patients diagnosed with CP/CPPS were included in the study. Primary outcome included evaluation of variation in IPSS/NIH-CPSI score and the quality of life and symptoms at the end of the therapy. The secondary outcome measure was the assessment of the comorbidity role in the CP/CPPS therapy.
A total
of 63 patients were included in the study. These patients were randomized into
two groups as; 29 patients treated with 2 tablets of flower pollen extract
along with vitamins daily for 6 weeks and 34 patients with 1 tablet of Serenoa
repens 320 mg daily for 6 weeks. The mean score varied from -12.7 ± 4.3 for
IPSS in the Flower pollen extract along with vitamins group and -7.8 ± 4.7 in
the Serenoa repens group. The NIH-CPSI was -17.3±3.1 in the Flower
pollen extract along with vitamins group and -13.6±4.8 in the Serenoa repens
group. Also, after evaluating the comorbidity subgroups, the mean IPSS score
variation was -14.3±3.2 in the Flower pollen extract along with vitamins group
and -9.02±4.0 in the Serenoa repens group in the patients with
hypertension.
