School-aged athletes should be encouraged to adopt
healthy lifestyle as unhealthy living habits were significantly related to low
back pain.
Lifestyle can account for many physical changes in the body; a recent study showed that an unhealthy lifestyle could lead to low back pain among school-aged athletes. Among school-aged athletes, low back pain is a common symptom due to some sports activities risk factors.
A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the effect of an unhealthy lifestyle on school-aged athletes. The lifestyle activities that were evaluated during the studies were sleeping time, wake-up time, bedtime, TV-viewing or video-game-playing time per day. The students of 6 to 15 years old were included in the study. For evaluation, a self-reported questionnaire and multivariate logistic regression models were used. The variables used during multivariate logistic regression models were age, gender, body mass index, number of days in practice per week, number of hours in practice per day, team levels, and lifestyles.
The frequency of low back pain among students noted during the study was 5.0%.
Further, the factors such as short sleeping time, late bedtime and long
video-game-playing time per day were significantly related with low back pain.
However, wake-up time and TV-viewing time per day showed no relation to low
back pain.
So, the lifestyle activities like short sleeping time, longtime video-game
playing, and late bedtimes can cause low back pain among school athletes.
