Early septoplasty reduces pain, and ameliorates esthetic and functional outcomes in people undergoing septoplasty for correction of post-traumatic deviated nasal septum.
A prospective cohort study depicted that early septoplasty benefits post-traumatic deviated nasal septum (PTDNS) patients' functional and esthetic outcomes. Furthermore, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation is a reliable technique for assessing nose function objectively. Investigators sought to analyze therapy outcomes of early septoplasty to correct PTDNS and correlate it with CFD parameters.
In total, 12 candidates (1 female and 11 males) who received early septoplasty for PTDNS were incorporated. Clinical (nasal obstruction pain, nasal symmetry) and computational (Reynolds number, wall shear stress, velocity, pressure) outcome variables were ascertained. Individuals having a past history of closed reduction for nasal fractures (CR) and individuals without this history (NCR) made up the cohort. Response to treatment served as the key outcome indicator.
The relationship between clinical and computational factors was the secondary outcome while the impact of closed reduction on the results of septoplasty was the tertiary outcome. To examine the data, descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. At 5%, level of significance was established. A total of 12 patients made up the sample, and 5 of them underwent CFD assessment. The preoperative mean pain score dropped from 7.3 to 0.5 after surgery.
Post-operatively, all the participants exhibited a decrease in nasal blockage and deviation. Reynold's number and post-operative velocity were both reduced, according to CFD assessment, with a positive association between nasal obstruction and CFD parameters. Although participants in the CR group illustrated less nasal deviation and obstruction prior to septoplasty than those in the NCR group, their post-septoplasty results were similar. Thus, septoplasty is a promising surgical approach to manage naso-septal fractures.
