Elastic therapeutic taping appears to be an effective and safe treatment option for primary dysmenorrhea.
A systematic review and meta-analysis depicted that treatment with elastic therapeutic taping (ETT) improves the quality of life, anxiety, and pain intensity of females suffering from primary dysmenorrhea (PD). Investigators performed this study to determine the effectiveness and safety profile of ETT on symptoms of PD women.
Electronic databases such as CINAHL, PEDro, Embase, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and gray literature sources were explored for finding out relevant studies that evaluated the impact of ETT on PD management. Overall, 10 studies including 685 patients were incorporated in the systematic review and 8 studies were included in the quantitative assessment. The pain was considered as the major endpoint. Estimated by PEDro scale, study quality was reported to range from 4 to 7 with a median of 5.
In contrast to sham and no interventions, ETT exhibited short-term pain amelioration in the meta-analysis. Furthermore, ETT exhibited short-term betterment in anxiety related to PD. Hence, this study offered moderate to high-quality evidence that ETT is a useful therapeutic approach for ameliorating pain, anxiety, and quality of life of PD women.
