Danzhi-Xiaoyao pills have been proven effective for relieving symptoms of burning mouth syndrome, without any adverse effects, reported a randomized trial published in ‘BMC Oral Health’.
Burning Mouth Syndrome is characterized by a burning pain in the tongue, often escorted by dry mouth, altered sensations, and taste changes, generally without observable clinical signs or distinctive histopathological changes.
This study provides the basis for using Chinese patent medicine in treating oral mucosal diseases. It was executed from October 2020 to October 2022 and involved 78 patients (mainly women). Participants were randomly assigned to either a trial group receiving Danzhi-Xiaoyao pills along with mecobalamine tablets or a control group receiving mecobalamine tablets only.
Results showed that the trial group experienced significant improvements across different assessments, Visual Analogue Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome integral scores compared to the control group. However, Beck Anxiety Inventory scores did not vary significantly between the groups. The total effective rate was 73.68% in the trial group versus 52.94% in the control group, with no recurrence. No adverse effects were stated in either group.
