A handy vagus nerve stimulator got green signal from FDA, it
can be used for migraine prevention.
Recently, an extended indication for a portable, non-invasive vagus stimulation tool to prevent migraine in adult patients has been granted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
This adjunctive therapeutic device has been used for pain relief in episodic cluster headache, migraine headache and cluster headache. A low voltage electric signal generated by this tool makes an electric field that surrounds, thereby stimulating the vagus nerve.
The efficacy of this tool for chronic and episodic migraine prevention has been established in two studies. The patients had to use it trice daily, along with 2 repeated bilateral stimulations upon waking, and both, 6 - 8 hours after the 1st and 2nd daily treatment.
Also, this treatment is not indicated in pregnancy, pediatric patients and in patients with cardiovascular issues like hyper- or hypotension; bradycardia, or tachycardia.
This stimulator is not advisable in patients who have had metallic device for example a bone plate or stent, etc. inserted at or close to their neck. Also, this tool cannot be used along with any other electronic gadget simultaneously (like, TENS, muscle stimulator or any handy electronic device, even a cell phone).
