Key take away

Previous studies have documented the fact that thyroid hormone level may be a contributing factor to bone loss during the postmenopausal period. The results of this research revealed that the urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Background

To evaluate the association between the level of iodine in the body and postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Method

One hundred thirty-two patients selected and categorised into three groups. Group one involved 34  healthy postmenopausal females; group two involved 38 osteopenic females and group three involved 60 postmenopausal osteoporosis. The three groups were compared for laboratory, clinical, and demographic findings.

Result

Group one exhibited higher urinary iodine levels followed by osteopenic and postmenopausal osteoporosis group. These differences were conserved following the adjustment for body mass index. The urinary iodine level precisely associated with the total T-score for the lumbar spine. The urinary iodine level was considerably related to total T-score after adjusting alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme, urinary deoxypyridinoline, and body mass index.

Conclusion

The females with postmenopausal osteoporosis exhibited considerably lower levels of urinary iodine and iodine replacement may be necessary in countering osteoporosis within areas where iodine insufficiency is endemic.
