The total knee replacement implements different operative procedures due to the severity of knee valgus.
Total joint replacement (TKR) is considered as the last option for treatment of severe disease of the knee. According to the severity of knee valgus, different operative approaches were used in TKR. Therefore in this study, the author assessed the different operative approaches in TKR and proved this as useful and safest procedure.
The total knee replacement implements different operative procedures due to the severity of knee valgus. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of various operative methods conducting severity of knee valgus.
A retrospective analysis was conducted between May 2011 to March 2014 by selecting 31 patients with knee valgus. Two groups were established; the medial approach group comprised medial method trip knee replacement for mild and moderate patients, and lateral approach group involved lateral approach for severe patients. Both groups were compared using Kss score, valgus corrected angle, and postoperative knee joint activity. The groups also compared for patellar trajectory and anterior knee pain, operative time, and postoperative blood loss.
All the operations were complete with no complication rate. The postoperative knee valgus angle of the medial approach group was (7 ± 1)°. The KSS score of the knee joint and degree of knee joint activity was (80.1 ± 5.2) and (85.2 ± 5.2)°, respectively after the three months following the operation. In comparison with preoperative data, considerable differences were identified. The lateral approach exhibited the comparable results with (85.2 ± 5.3)° knee joint activity after three months postoperatively, (80.3 ± 3.2) KSS score of knee joint, and (8.2 ± 2.3)° postoperative knee valgus angle. Although, all the groups showed no notable differences regarding postoperative blood loss, patellar trajectory or anterior knee pain, and operative time.
Different operative procedures in total knee replacement as per the knee valgus severity were demonstrated as efficient and safe methods.
