Key take away

Diosmin is an effective medication for lowering elevated menstrual blood loss that copper intrauterine device users suffer.

Background

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Diosmin in reducing menstrual blood loss in menorrhagic women using intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs).

Method

A total of 100 women who were complaining of heavy periods following the usage of a copper IUCD were recruited and split into Group 1 and Group 2. The subjects in Group 2 were given Diosmin oral tablets (500 mg three times a day) on the first day of the menstrual cycle and continued until the bleeding ceased, whereas subjects in Group 1 were given a placebo.

Result

In both groups, bleeding before therapy and after the first cycle of treatment had a clinically meaningful difference. However, bleeding during the first, second, or third cycles of treatment did not considerably differ. The mean bleeding days prior to and following treatment varied significantly between the groups.

Conclusion

In women who use copper intrauterine devices, Diosmin is a promising medication that helps to reduce increased menstrual blood loss.
