Key take away

In comparison with other solutions, the utilization of Qmix as an irrigation solution led to decreased levels of postoperative pain at 24 hours after root canal therapy.

Background

A randomized double-blind clinical research was conducted to examine the impact of various final irrigation solutions on postoperative pain.

Method

Overall, 89 patients having nonvital molar and premolar teeth with periapical lesions (Periapical Index, PAI: 3-4) were included. None of the subjects had any signs or symptoms. According to the final irrigation solutions employed, the patients were randomly divided into three groups: G1: 2 mL of Qmix (n=29), G2: 2 mL of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (n=30), and G3: 2 mL of 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) (n=30).

Flurbiprofen 100 mg was given to each patient to be taken as required for pain. At 12, 24, 48, 72, and one week, the subjects were asked to evaluate their pain level using verbal rating scale. Chi-squared analysis with Monte Carlo simulation, Pearson's chi-squared test, and Fisher's exact test were all used to examine the data.

Result

The postoperative pain rates at 12, 48, 72 h, and one week showed no discernible variations. At 24 hours with CHX and EDTA, a considerably decreased pain level was seen in the Qmix group. At 72 hours, the rate of mild pain in the EDTA group (18.8%) was considerably greater in premolar teeth when compared to molar teeth. At 12 hours, individuals >60 years of age in the EDTA group had substantially greater levels of moderate pain.

Conclusion

For postoperative pain alleviation, Qmix can thus be regarded as an appropriate final irrigation solution in endodontic therapy.
