Key take away

Post COVID-19 neurological impairment influences both acute and long-haul covid patients.

Background

A study was conducted to assess the debilitating effects on the daily life of post COVID cognitive impairment, from the patient perspective.

Method

Overall, 46 participants were recruited and asked about their COVID-19 experience regarding the diagnosis, medical care system, and their recovery process. Analysis of the post-cognitive impairment was done for qualitative and statistical significance.

Result

Notably, 20 out of 46 participants reported cognitive decline following the acute phase of their SARS-CoV-2 infection. Out of those 20, 8 participants were self-identified long-haul corona patients. Three patterns of impairment identified by the patients were mental stamina, attention, and memory.

These novel cognitive decline influenced daily life in 4 critical ways: (1) development of coping tactics, (2) insecurity in social interactions, (3) necessitated a reduction in employment responsibilities, and (4) failure to adhere to everyday responsibilities.

Conclusion

It is crucial to acknowledge post COVID-19 neurological impairment (long-term effect) as an outcome for anyone who experiences coronavirus infection. This will aid in better awareness of patient illness experience and the development of treatment post-acute infection.
