Kinesio taping vs. cold therapy for rotator cuff tendonitis: A comparison of short-term effects

Key take away

In rotator cuff tendonitis patients, both kinesio taping and cold therapy improve pain and function when used alongside exercise. Kinesio taping provides additional benefits for grip strength, range of motion, activity pain, and function. Combining kinesio taping with exercise may offer better short-term rehabilitation benefits.

Background

This prospective and randomized study sought to examine the short-term effects of kinesio taping (KT) and cold therapy (CT) in rotator cuff tendonitis.

Method

Overall, 114 patients suffering from  rotator cuff tendonitis were screened for eligibility, with 52 meeting the inclusion criteria. These volunteers were randomly allocated to either the KT group (n=26) or the CT group (n=26). All the enrolled subjects followed a regular home exercise protocol. At baseline and after 3 days of KT or CT use, pain severity, upper limb functionality, shoulder range of motion, and grip power were measured.

Result

Remarkable improvements were noted in all assessment measures in the KT group. In comparison with baseline, pain scores (excluding numerical rating scale [NRS] during activity) markedly improved by the third day of application in the CT-treated participants. For all outcome measures, the time × group interaction was clinically meaningful in favor of the KT group, with the exception of resting pain.

Conclusion

Both KT and CT can serve as adjunctive modalities to exercise for alleviating resting and night pain in patients with rotator cuff tendonitis. However, KT demonstrated additional benefits for activity-linked pain, function, range of motion, and grip strength. For short-term rehabilitation, combining KT with exercise may be a more useful approach than using CT alone for ameliorating upper extremity functionality, pain at night, and pain during activity.
