Key take away

Gastrointestinal health can be improved with Xiangsha Liujunzi decoction which enhances motility, protects the mucosa, and moderates inflammation and digestion.

Background

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Xiangsha Liujunzi decoction (traditional Chinese medicine) consisting of 6 medicinal herbs frequently used for functional dyspepsia.

Method

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on Xiangsha Liujunzi decoction for functional dyspepsia was conducted with data retrieved from seven databases. The quality of the study was evaluated via the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Outcomes included total clinical effectiveness rate (primary), gastric emptying rate, symptom score, and safety (secondary).

Result

Analysis of 23 studies with 2,101 participants showed that Xiangsha Liujunzi decoction significantly improved clinical effectiveness, gastric emptying rate, and symptom scores compared to controls. Additionally, the safety profiles did not vary considerably between the decoction and control groups.

Conclusion

Xiangsha Liujunzi decoction notably improves gastric emptying rate and symptoms of functional dyspepsia with no significant adverse effects. Future high-quality randomized controlled trials are required to confirm these findings.
