Can ankylosing spondylitis escalate risk of ocular inflammatory diseases?

What's new?

Ankylosing spondylitis is genetically linked to a higher risk of uveitis, iridocyclitis, scleritis, and episcleritis, but not keratitis or optic neuritis, offering potential insights for preventing spondylitis complications.

A study issued in "Frontiers in Genetics" has uncovered a genetic connection between ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and several serious eye conditions, revealing new insights into how this chronic inflammatory disease could impact ocular health. By analyzing genome-wide association study (GWAS) data and public health information, the research aimed to determine whether AS genetically predisposes individuals to ocular inflammation.

A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) assessment was conducted employing 5 methods: MR-Egger, simple mode, weighted mode, weighted median, and inverse-variance weighted. Sensitivity analysis was carried out via various techniques, including MR-Egger intercept, MR-PRESSO, leave-one-out analysis, Cochran's Q test, outlier methods, and funnel plots. The study's findings were striking: the risk of uveitis in AS patients was nearly 3 times higher (Odds ratio [OR] 2.825), while episcleritis exhibited a dramatic 5-fold rise in risk (OR 5.113).

Other conditions such as iridocyclitis (OR 3.806) and scleritis (OR 1.738) also exhibited similarly elevated risks, making eye health an important concern for those suffering from AS. However, the study found no genetic link between AS and other eye conditions like optic neuritis (OR 0.868) or keratitis (OR 1.041), which came up with no significant association.

These findings highlight the requisition for heightened awareness and early intervention in AS sufferers, particularly in addressing the risk of ocular inflammatory diseases. The research adds valuable information that could help guide clinical strategies to evade or mitigate these potentially debilitating complications in AS patients.
