Dienogest: A pain reliever but not a fibroid shrinker!

Endometriosis Endometriosis
Endometriosis Endometriosis

What's new?

Dienogest effectively alleviates pain and reduces symptoms in women with endometriosis or adenomyosis and shrinks ovarian endometriotic cysts. However, it does not hamper uterine fibroids growth.

Dienogest, a treatment for endometriosis and adenomyosis, is gradually being used in medical practice. However, its impact on uterine fibroids hasn't been well studied. A retrospective analysis published in the “World Journal of Clinical Cases” was conducted on patients suffering from uterine fibroids treated using Dienogest for endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Clinical data from uterine fibroids-affected patients at Peking University First Hospital were retrospectively scrutinized. The study examined changes in fibroid size and treatment effectiveness. It was observed that after 3, 6, and 12 months of Dienogest use, the maximum diameter and volume of uterine fibroids increased compared to pre-treatment levels. Adenomyoma size initially elevated after 3 months, but then dropped after 6 months and 1 year as opposed to the pretreatment levels, though not significantly.

Endometrial thickness decreased, and antigen 125 levels also dropped significantly. A whopping 63 out of 64 patients with dysmenorrhea saw significant pain relief after 6 months, with all reporting relief after 12 months and high drug tolerance with an average score of 8.73. Dienogest is effective in managing pain and reducing ovarian endometriotic cysts but does not inhibit the growth of uterine fibroids.
