Hyaluronan or Hyaluronic acid protects the cartilage, promotes joint health and modulates adropin levels, thereby managing inflammation and pain associated with knee osteoarthritis.

Renowned journal 'Cureus’ has published a new comparative trial addressing the effectiveness of popular supplements like hyaluronic acid (HA), glucosamine (Glc), and chondroitin sulfate (CS) for knee osteoarthritis (OA), a painful inflammatory condition.

Piercarlo Minoretti and colleagues enrolled 51 patients with mild-to-moderate knee OA for a four-week randomized, single-blind trial. Participants were divided into three groups consisting of 17 people in each group:

  • HA group (HA 300mg + Boswellia serrata extract) with one tablet given daily
  • Glc+CS group (Glc 415 mg + CS group 400 mg + curcuminoids isolated from Curcuma longa L 50 mg
  • Control group

Pain, function and serum adropin levels were assessed at the start and end of the study. Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores were used to evaluate OA.

Both HA and Glc + CS supplements improved pain and function compared to baseline, with HA showing significantly better outcomes in pain relief and increased serum adropin levels. Both supplements were well-tolerated, with minimal adverse effects.
