What's new?

LED light’s superior efficacy, faster onset, and lack of discomfort can be a turning point in dental care by providing a non-invasive, patient-friendly alternative for managing pain.

In a remarkable revolution, a recent clinical study issued in ‘Lasers in Medical Science’ has shown that light-emitting diode (LED) light outperforms traditional diode lasers in providing effective dental pain relief. This pioneering research by Sachin Kulkarni and colleagues explored the potential of a multi-wavelength LED system as a non-pharmacological alternative for dental analgesia.

The study tested the effects of four different light sources, 660, 808, and 904 nm diode lasers, together with a novel LED system (700-1100 nm)—on the dental pulp of 93 healthy premolar teeth from 26 adults (age range 22–63 years). Wong-Baker scale was used to note down the discomfort caused by photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy. The results were impressive. While all light sources induced a rise in electric pulp testing readings, the LED light generated the most momentous and lasting effect, with results continuing at 20 minutes, a duration other lasers couldn't achieve.

Additionally, the LED light was the most comfortable, with no discomfort reported during treatment, unlike the 904 nm and 808 nm lasers, which caused some participants mild discomfort.

This study positions LED PBM as a promising new option for dental analgesia, providing faster, longer-lasting pain relief without the discomfort associated with traditional laser treatments.
