Collaboration between pediatricians and dentists is vital to uncover hidden signs of child abuse, neglect, and trafficking, possibly saving countless lives.
Healthcare providers, including pediatricians and dentists, are urged to work together to enhance the prevention, early detection, and treatment of abuse, neglect, and related oral health issues in children as per a clinical report published in the “Pediatrics” journal.
In all 50 states, professionals in healthcare are legally required to apprise suspected subjects of abuse or neglect to appropriate authorities. A report by Susan A Fisher-Owens et al. emphasized the critical role oral and dental evaluations play in identifying signs of physical and sexual abuse, dental neglect, and even bullying.
Critical indicators encompass bite marks, injuries around and inside the mouth, infections, and conditions suggestive of abuse. Alarmingly, victims of human trafficking often present with oral health issues, further underscoring the importance of dental assessments.
While many medical providers are adept at recognizing injuries on the body, they may lack the training to identify oral health conditions linked to abuse or neglect. Hence, there is a need for stronger collaboration between pediatric and dental care teams to ensure no signs of mistreatment go unnoticed.
